The view looks up into a grove of coast redwoods, their massive reddish-brown trunks rising like columns while sunlight filters through the green canopy. The printed caption calls the trees "undisputed monarchs of this scenic kingdom" and claims many stand more than 300 feet above the highway and range from 3,000 to 4,000 years old. By the 1930s, improved roads and auto tourism brought travelers through California's redwood country, where such groves were promoted as scenic wonders along the Redwood Highway.
