Tall conifers fill Cathedral Woods on Monhegan Island, Maine, their trunks rising close together as sunlight filters through the canopy. Monhegan, a small island off the Maine coast, was a summer art colony by the early 20th century, and its woods, cliffs, and harbor drew painters and summer visitors. The grove's name points to the cathedral-like effect of the tall, straight trees.
