About this postcard
A herd of red-and-white cattle moves along a dirt path beside a stream, urged on by a herdsman in a dark coat and hat. A low tree line and a pink-and-orange sunset sky close the scene. The caption "RUSTIC LIFE. GETTING THIRSTY." frames the image as a rural genre view, with the animals headed toward water at the end of the day. Rural genre scenes were common postcard subjects in the early twentieth century, sold as inexpensive views of country life. Driving stock to a stream was a familiar farm routine in an era when many farms still watered livestock at ponds and creeks rather than from piped supplies.
