About this postcard
A steep, broken cliff of grey rock, the Great Stone Face, rises above dark evergreen forest on the flank of Mount Mansfield, with a softer green ridge and a pale, cloud-streaked sky behind. The printed caption names the formation and the nearby Cave of the Winds on the side of the mountain in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Mount Mansfield is Vermont's highest peak, and its exposed ridgeline and cliffs have long drawn hikers and sightseers to the Stowe and Smugglers' Notch area. By the 1920s the state's mountain roads were drawing summer auto tourists, and views like this one were common souvenirs of a Vermont trip.
