About this postcard

The view shows Central High School in Winchester, Tennessee: a two-story brick building with rows of tall windows, partly screened by large shade trees, with a curved walk crossing the lawn in front. H. C. Schwartz of Winchester issued the card, and the halftone printing carries the mark of Dexter Press of Pearl River, New York, a firm that produced views for small-town publishers and photographers through the 1930s and 1940s. Winchester, the seat of Franklin County in the hills south of Nashville, was a small market town where a school building of this size stood out as a local landmark. The card was mailed in 1943, and the sender, Zell, writes only of the weather and a plan to cook Sunday dinner, the sort of everyday note such hometown views were meant to carry.
