About this postcard

Elevated view across a broad sheet of water in Central Park toward the wall of apartment buildings lining the park's edge, with lawns, winding paths and clumps of trees in the foreground. The reservoir-like lake and the surrounding parkland are the work of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, whose 1858 "Greensward" plan created the first major landscaped public park in the United States. The tall apartment blocks along Central Park West and Fifth Avenue rose largely in the first decades of the twentieth century, replacing earlier mansions.
