Charcoal seller with ox, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, 1907

About this postcard

A man in a wide-brimmed hat rides atop a loaded ox, sacks of charcoal piled around him, on a sandy street in Puerto Plata. A small boy and a man in a vest and tie stand near a wooden building at right, and another figure walks in the background. The printed caption reads "PUERTO PLATA (Rep. Dominicana) / Vendedor de Carbon." Puerto Plata, on the Dominican Republic's north coast, was a busy export port in the first decade of the 1900s. Charcoal was the everyday cooking fuel, and ox teams like this one did the hauling through town before motor trucks reached the island. The card was mailed in 1907, which dates the scene to that era.
