Charles River and Waltham Canoe Club, Waltham, MA, circa 1905

About this postcard

Canoes crowd the Charles River, many with paddlers and passengers, a few shaded by umbrellas. On the right bank, the Waltham Canoe Club clubhouse flies an American flag, and a crowd gathers on its porch. Wooded hills line the left bank under a pale sky. Canoe clubs were popular social and athletic organizations on New England rivers in the early 1900s, and this scene shows a summer gathering at Waltham's club in an industrial city west of Boston.
