About this postcard
A view down Charlotte Street in St. Augustine, where whitewashed two-story buildings with steep red tile roofs and overhanging wooden balconies line the unpaved roadway. The printed caption calls the street quaint and notes that many of its houses date to the Spanish occupation. St. Augustine, founded by Spain in 1565, is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the continental United States, and its narrow colonial-era streets and coquina-walled houses are its best-known features. Charlotte Street is among the city's oldest thoroughfares, in a district shaped by Spanish colonial and later Minorcan settlement.
