Chesuncook Lake, Maine, rocky overhang and pines, 1906

About this postcard

A still lake at dusk, seen from beneath a dark rocky ledge and overhanging pines, with a pink and pale-green sky reflected in the water. The printed caption identifies the scene as Chesuncook Lake, Maine, a large lake in the North Maine Woods of Piscataquis County. In the early 1900s the region drew sportsmen and summer visitors to its camps and guided fishing and hunting grounds. The sender wrote on the picture side, "This is near Rockland, Maine," a discrepancy with the printed caption that may reflect a hurried message or a mix-up of views.
