About this postcard

A row of Cheyenne dwellings stands on open prairie: several tall tipis and a long arbor of upright poles lashed with horizontal rails, with a few figures in dark clothing and blankets gathered near the entrances. The printed caption names the scene simply as a Cheyenne Indian Village in Oklahoma. By the time this view was printed, the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho had lived on allotted lands in western Oklahoma for more than a decade, and images of tipis and camp life were steady sellers as souvenirs of the region. Such camps were often seasonal or ceremonial gatherings rather than year-round homes.
