About this postcard

A stone chimera perches on a balustrade high on Notre-Dame Cathedral, seen in profile with its mouth open. The creature has a scaly body, pointed ears, and a grotesque face; behind it, stone walls give way to a hazy view over Paris. The figures known as chimères were added to the cathedral's upper galleries in the 19th century during Eugène Viollet-le-Duc's restoration, and they are often loosely called gargoyles.
