About this postcard
The interior of a Christian Science chapel in Springfield, Massachusetts, on its opening day, November 26, 1905. The view looks toward the platform, where a reading desk stands among potted palms and floral arrangements, with a large pipe organ behind it. The organ facade carries the motto "Who is so great a God as our God" (Psalm 77:13), a text often inscribed in Christian Science churches. The arrangement reflects Christian Science worship, which centers on readings from the Bible and Science and Health rather than a traditional altar. The movement was expanding quickly in the early 1900s, and branch congregations marked new chapels with public services.
