Christmas greeting card with holly, Waltham, England, 1915

Card type
Lithograph

About this postcard

A Christmas greeting card built around a raised oval frame of embossed gold scrollwork, with sprays of holly leaves and red berries at the sides and top and a small lithographed landscape vignette — a quiet river or pond with dark trees — set in a blue-bordered opening at the center. The verse, printed in blackletter type with red and blue initials, sends good wishes to an old friend at Christmas, and the greeting "A Joyful Xmas" closes the design. Cards of this embossed, verse-and-holly style were a staple of the early twentieth-century Christmas postcard trade, often sent in place of a letter to distant friends and relatives.
