Christmas greeting with snowy cottage, Ilion, NY, 1918

About this postcard

A Christmas greeting printed on a pale blue ground. At the top, "HAPPY CHRISTMAS" sits above a shield-shaped inset of a snow-covered red cottage with lamplit windows, a small figure on a snowy path, and a dark starry sky. Sprigs of holly with red berries and mistletoe flank the scene. Below, a four-line verse reads, "The best of luck, / The best of cheer, / A Christmas wish, / To one who's dear." The cottage and winter greenery draw on familiar holiday symbols of home, warmth, and welcome. By the late 1910s, printed Christmas greetings like this were a common way to send holiday wishes by mail, and the card's cheerful verse and cozy scene fit that custom.
