Christmas greeting with windmill and sailboat, Amesbury, MA, 1903

About this postcard

An embossed holly border frames a small inset scene of a snow-covered windmill and cottage beside water at sunset, with a two-masted sailboat in the foreground and "Kind Wishes for Christmas" raised at the bottom. The card was sent from Amesbury, Massachusetts, a Merrimack Valley mill town then known for carriage building, and addressed locally to Miss Charlotte on Sparhawk Street (written on the card as "Spahawk St"). The sender, Jack, wrote a short holiday line wishing "Merry Xmas & Happy New Year." Raised, brightly lithographed Christmas cards of this kind were a common way to send seasonal greetings in the first years of the twentieth century.
