Christmas still life with plate and holly, Whitehall, NY, 1910

Card type

About this postcard

The card shows a Christmas still life: an ornate plate painted with a stone bridge over water, a yellow bowl, a green pitcher, and sprigs of holly. The printed greeting reads "HEARTY GREETING" above and "WISHING YOU A MERRY XMAS" below, combining tableware and holiday greenery in a common early-20th-century motif. Sam sent the card from Whitehall, New York, a few days before Christmas 1910, writing that he wished he could be there for the holiday. Whitehall sits at the southern end of Lake Champlain and was then a busy canal and railroad village.
