About this postcard

A tinted view of City Hall Square in Hartford, Connecticut, with a green and red open-platform trolley stopped at the center. Pedestrians in period dress cross the square, and a horse-drawn wagon and carriage share the street. Tall commercial blocks line the left side, one carrying signs for a printing establishment and a tea company; a large tree and a sign reading "WEST BOUND PASSENGERS TAKE CARS HERE" frame the right. The square was Hartford's civic and commercial heart in the early 1900s and a busy transfer point on the city's trolley network. The sign for westbound passengers points to the everyday business of streetcar travel, when riders changed cars in the middle of downtown.
