About this postcard
St. Louis City Hall fills the view, its steep roofs, gables, and central tower rising over a lawn and roadway. Two early automobiles sit in the foreground. Completed in 1904, the French Renaissance building was modeled on the Hôtel de Ville in Paris and designed by Eckel & Mann; it stands at 12th (now Tucker) and Market as the seat of city government. The card was sent to Cpl. Harry Benton at Camp Pike, Arkansas, a World War I training camp, and carries the food-conservation slogan "Food will win the war don't waste it," a reminder of the U.S. Food Administration's conservation campaign.
