About this postcard

A tinted view of Savannah's City Market, a long brick market hall with round-arched windows, round oculus vents and deep overhanging eaves, with horse-drawn wagons and vendors' stalls clustered along the curb in front. Savannah's City Market stood on Ellis Square from the early 19th century until it was demolished in 1954; the surrounding market district was a busy commercial hub for produce, meat and seafood brought in from the surrounding Georgia lowcountry. The square has since been redeveloped, and a modern market building now occupies the site.
