About this postcard
A night view of Lakeland's civic center, with a long low building behind a reflecting pool ringed by a balustrade and tall floodlight pylons; city buildings glow in the background beneath a moonlit, cloud-streaked sky. Lakeland, in Polk County, grew as a citrus-shipping center on the Florida peninsula and built civic improvements in the 1920s-30s, of which this landscaped municipal complex with its illuminated pool was a showpiece. The card's saturated night coloring is typical of the linen-era view cards of the late 1930s and 1940s.
