About this postcard
The picture shows Cleopatra Terrace, one of the travertine hot-spring terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, with pale, mineral-crusted steps and pools of blue-green water backed by a dense stand of evergreen trees. Steam rises from the active spring at the left, and the terraces are tinted in the pinks, oranges and yellows produced by heat-loving bacteria and algae. Mammoth Hot Springs sits atop a limestone deposit and its terraces are constantly rebuilt as hot water rich in calcium carbonate flows over them; Cleopatra Terrace is among the formations on the Mammoth Terraces. The linen-era coloring and the printed number 2A-H709 point to a mid-20th-century issue.
