About this postcard
Cleopatra Terrace at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park appears as a stair-step formation of pale travertine, with shallow pools of blue-green water and steam rising from the active spring at the left. Evergreen trees crowd the slope behind it, and the terraces carry the pink, orange, and yellow tints produced by heat-loving bacteria and algae. The caption notes that the terrace is reached by the Terrace Trail and that the springs deposit lime so rapidly that objects left in the water take on a coating within a day or two. Mammoth Hot Springs is built on limestone, and its terraces are continually reshaped as calcium-carbonate-rich water cools and leaves behind the marble-like rock called travertine.
