About this postcard
The Cliff House stands on the grassy crest of Bald Head Cliff, a granite headland on the southern Maine coast, with surf breaking on the rocks below. The long wooden hotel, topped by a cupola and lined with windows, was part of the summer resort trade that drew visitors to York in the early twentieth century. The Cliff House at Bald Head Cliff was established in 1872 and became one of the region's large seaside hotels. A summer visitor writes to a friend in Amesbury, Massachusetts, that she would love it here and mentions a marriage among the girls of Shawsheen, a small glimpse of the social circle around the hotel.
