Clingman's Dome, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, circa 1935

Card type

About this postcard

The view looks from Mount LeConte toward Clingman's Dome, the rounded summit on the Tennessee-North Carolina line that the caption gives as 6,642 feet and calls the highest peak in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, second in the East only to Mount Mitchell. Forested ridges fall away between the two peaks, with the dome rising on the main crest of the Smokies. The caption points out the observation tower on the summit, reached from the parking area at the end of the Skyway Drive from Newfound Gap. The park was established in 1934, and the card belongs to the early years of auto tourism on its high ridges, when the new road and tower opened the dome to car traffic.
