Clover blossoms with contentment motto, 1910

About this postcard

A spray of purple-red clover blossoms and green trefoil leaves fills the left side of the card, facing a hand-lettered motto: "It is right to be contented / With what we have / Never with what we are." The verse pairs a simple floral design with a moral about accepting one's circumstances. Motto and sentiment postcards were common in the early twentieth century, when a postcard could carry a short greeting for little more than the price of a stamp. This example was sent with best wishes for the coming year.
