Coast Royal on the bluff above the beach, Laguna Beach, California, circa 1935

About this postcard

A white stucco building with red tile roofs, the Coast Royal, sits on a landscaped bluff above a sandy cove, with a small red-roofed gazebo and terraced flower beds stepping down toward the shore; rocky ledges run out into the blue Pacific beyond. Coast Royal was one of the early hostelries developed along Laguna Beach's oceanfront in the first decades of the twentieth century, when the former artists' colony became a resort town. The card's linen texture and Curt Teich-style number date it to the 1930s.
