About this postcard
A paved highway with a stone guard wall curves along a wooded cliff above the Columbia River. A car is visible on the road at left, and forested mountains rise across the water. The printed caption identifies the view as the Columbia River Highway looking west from Eagle Creek, with Tooth Mountain and the Bridge of the Gods in the distance. The highway was built between 1913 and 1922, promoted as the "King of Roads," and followed the south bank of the Columbia through the gorge as a model for scenic automobile routes. The caption quotes Richmond Pearson Hobson: "Only one city can have a Columbia River Highway. It will make Portland famous."
