Comic chickens breakfast in bed, Maysville, MO, 1907

About this postcard

Two white hens sit propped against pillows in a brass-and-iron bed, each holding a cup and saucer. A breakfast tray with pancakes, toast, and soft-boiled eggs rests on the counterpane, and a framed sign on the wall reads "BREAKFAST IN BED CHARGED EXTRA." The joke turns on hotel charges for breakfast brought to the room, a familiar comic-postcard theme in the early 1900s. The sender's note to "Rooster Jane" keeps the barnyard pun going, complaining about prickly pear cactus splinters and recalling a good time at Chautauqua, then a popular circuit of traveling lectures and entertainments.

Dear Rooster Jane! - This is from "Slow-but sure?". I was glad to hear from you but I do hate to write letters. It takes so much time. I received your prickly pear cactus, but I wished I hadn't about 2 min. after I did get it. I was picking splinters the rest of the day. I have the lilies from Lill[?] and anything from[?]. We had a splendid time at Chautauqua - my haste in writing and my bad pen. [?] card me soon. Yours [?]
