About this postcard
A green-and-red pennant lettered "BURLINGTON, PA." hangs above a photograph of a young couple in a close embrace, the man kissing the woman's cheek while she wears a wide-brimmed hat. The captions "They Do These Things in" and "Only on Long Acquaintance" turn the scene into a small-town courtship joke: such familiarity, the card teases, comes only after long acquaintance. Burlington is a small borough in Bradford County in north-central Pennsylvania. The sender, Elora, mailed the card to her cousin Lottie Ward in Waverly, N.Y., with the apology "Excuse this awful card" and an invitation to come out for the summer.
