Comic policeman and intoxicated man, Atlantic City, NJ, 1915

Printed photo

About this postcard

A tinted comic view shows a uniformed policeman, badge lettered 'POLICE' on his coat, supporting a slumped, disheveled man on a brick-paved street. The man holds a bottle in one hand and a bag in the other, and a woman in a white dress watches from a doorway at left. The printed caption "HUG ME CLOSER DARLING." turns the arrest into a mock-romantic joke, a staple of early twentieth-century American humor postcards. The sender's note jokes that this is how they did to him "here," making the card a comic souvenir of an Atlantic City visit.
