Comic rooster and hen with chicks, "I am laying for you", circa 1907

About this postcard

A two-colour comic illustration shows a strutting red rooster courting a red hen that sits on a nest of eggs surrounded by chicks, with a second hen and a picket fence drawn in blue behind them. The printed red slogan "I am laying for you" puns on the hen's egg-laying and on the rooster's amorous intentions, a style of humorous courtship card popular in the early 1900s. Such penny comic cards were commonly mailed for a few cents and often carried the sender's message on the picture side before divided backs became standard.
