About this postcard
The linen postcard captioned “Commercial Place showing Confederate Monument and Ferry Slips, Norfolk, Va.” looks down a broad commercial street toward the Elizabeth River, with the tall Confederate monument in the foreground and automobiles and storefronts along both sides. The monument was a granite column topped by a bronze Confederate soldier, erected in 1899 at Commercial Place; it was removed in 2020. The view also shows the ferry slips at the foot of the street, where ferries crossed to Portsmouth.
