About this postcard

A tall granite obelisk on a stepped base rises from a curving path in Capitol Park, Birmingham, Alabama. A smaller statue of a soldier on a pedestal stands at right among the trees. The monument commemorated Confederate soldiers and sailors; the United Daughters of the Confederacy erected it in the early 1900s, and it stood in the downtown park, now Linn Park, until the city removed it in 2020. In that era, Confederate memorials were being placed in public squares and parks across the South, often as civic ceremonies drew local crowds.
