A broad commercial street runs toward the Elizabeth River, with the tall Confederate monument in the foreground and automobiles and storefronts lining both sides. At the foot of the street are the ferry slips that connected Norfolk with Portsmouth. The monument, a granite column topped by a bronze Confederate soldier, was erected in 1899 at Commercial Place and stood there until its removal in 2020. The view dates to the mid-20th century, when downtown Norfolk's waterfront still handled ferry traffic and street-level retail.
