About this postcard

At a downtown Macon street corner, a tall pedestal carries a standing Confederate soldier holding a rifle, set on a stepped base. A brick church or public building with a tower stands to the left, and a street with utility poles runs off to the right. The monument, dedicated in 1879, memorialized local Confederate dead and stood as a familiar landmark in the city's commercial core in the early 1900s.
