About this postcard

A tall column rises on a grassy rise, topped by a figure holding a flag, with four standing statues grouped around the tiered base and a low iron fence enclosing the monument grounds. The Alabama Confederate Monument, designed by Alexander Doyle and dedicated in 1898, stands on the north side of the Alabama State Capitol grounds in Montgomery. Its base figures represent the infantry, artillery, cavalry, and naval branches of Confederate service. The monument was part of a broader late nineteenth-century effort to mark Confederate memory at Southern state capitols.
