About this postcard

The image shows a broad meadow with a massive, dark-foliaged tree at the left. In the distance at right, Salisbury Cathedral's tall spire rises above a line of trees, and small figures and a horse-drawn vehicle cross the grass before it. The scene reproduces John Constable's view of the cathedral, a subject he painted repeatedly; the spire was already a celebrated landmark, the tallest church spire in England. A handwritten note adds, 'Loveliest spire in all the world, L.C. thinks.'
