About this postcard
The view looks across Copley Square toward the Boston Public Library, its long Italian Renaissance facade and arcaded front filling the background, with the Copley Plaza Hotel and other Back Bay buildings behind the landscaped island. Automobiles cross the square. Contemporary descriptions called it one of the finest municipal squares in the country and the Copley Plaza New England's distinctive society hotel, then twenty years old. The library, designed by McKim, Mead & White, opened in 1895; the hotel followed in 1912. Copley Square was laid out in the 1880s on filled Back Bay land and named for painter John Singleton Copley.
