About this postcard
The view looks across Copley Square toward the Boston Public Library, the long Renaissance Revival building with its arcaded facade and red tile roof, with the Copley Plaza Hotel and other Back Bay buildings behind the landscaped traffic island. The square takes its name from painter John Singleton Copley and was laid out in the 1880s on filled land; the library, designed by McKim, Mead & White, opened in 1895, and the Copley Plaza Hotel followed in 1912. The automobiles and linen-textured printing date the card to the late 1930s or 1940s.
