About this postcard
The Corning Fountain stands in the foreground of Bushnell Park, with the gold dome of the Connecticut State Capitol rising above the trees behind it. The fountain was carved by sculptor J. Massey Rhind and paid for by a bequest from Hartford businessman John J. Corning, who wanted a memorial in the city's central park. Bushnell Park, laid out in the 1850s, is among the oldest publicly funded parks in the United States, and the Capitol at its north end was completed in 1878. The pairing of fountain and dome made a standard view for Hartford postcards of the era.
