Cotton bales on Second Street, Macon, Georgia, circa 1910

About this postcard

Second Street in Macon, Georgia, is lined with great stacks of cotton bales awaiting shipment, with a horse-drawn wagon and a loaded cart in the roadway and the Willingham cotton warehouses ("E.J. & P.D. WILLINGHAM") behind. Macon was one of the largest inland cotton markets in the South, and its Second Street cotton yards and warehouses were a well-known sight where bales were graded, weighed and stored before rail shipment. The domed and towered brick commercial blocks and the distant clock tower reflect the city's prosperous early-20th-century downtown.
