About this postcard

A vast open yard is filled with long, orderly rows of cotton bales stacked several high, with the long shed and smokestacks of a cotton compress company rising behind them and low hills on the horizon. The card names the site as the Cotton Compress Co. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, part of the cotton-handling and compressing industry that gathered the region's crop into dense bales for shipment by rail. Such yards were common in early twentieth-century Oklahoma, where cotton was a leading cash crop.
