About this postcard

Cotton bales by the hundred fill Court Square in Montgomery, Alabama, stacked around mule- and horse-drawn wagons and crowded by drivers and bystanders. The open market space is framed by tall commercial blocks, including a mansard-roofed brick building, with a cast-iron fountain at the left and a telegraph pole rising near the center. Montgomery was one of the South's major inland cotton markets, and Court Square was its commercial heart, where wagonloads from surrounding farms were weighed, graded, and sold. The cast-iron fountain at left, installed in the 1880s, was a familiar local landmark by the time of this view.
