About this postcard
A printed motto card with the verse "Count that day lost whose low descending sun / Views from thy hand no worthy action done" set in dark blue blackletter type inside a border of stylized green leaves. The card was sent as a short note from Mr. Gross to J. A. Grass in Petersburg, West Virginia. Gross writes that everyone is well, that a severe wind storm hit the night before, and that the boys are all out. Motto cards like this were common inexpensive greetings in the early twentieth century, offering a bit of moral encouragement alongside everyday correspondence.
