About this postcard
George Caleb Bingham's painting "The County Election" shows a crowd of men in nineteenth-century dress, many in wide-brimmed hats, gathered in a dirt street before the columned porch of a public building. A man on the porch gestures to the crowd; others converse, sit on the ground, and a dog stands among the figures. Bingham, a Missouri painter, made the scene in 1852 as a study of election-day sociability in a county-seat town, where voters, officials, and onlookers mixed in the open air. The painting is in the collection of the City Art Museum of St. Louis.
