A tree-shaded residential street recedes into the distance, with iron and picket fences, a gas-style lamp on the left sidewalk, and frame houses set among elms. The caption names it County Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts, then a busy textile port whose whaling fleet had long since faded. County Street was one of the city's principal residential avenues, lined with the mansions of whaling merchants and, later, of mill owners.
Handwritten photographer's signature ("S. E. Hicke") on the front image at lower left; thin white border; black-and-white real photo print.
