About this postcard
The narrow inner courtyard of Burg Eltz, captioned "Hof" on the print, with half-timbered upper stories rising over stone walls, steep tiled roofs, turrets, and tall chimneys. Ivy climbs the masonry, and an arched passage and small gabled outbuildings close off the lower end of the court. Burg Eltz stands in the hills above the Moselle between Koblenz and Trier, and the Eltz family has held it since the Middle Ages. Its survival through the wars that ruined most Rhineland castles left a dense layering of Romanesque and Gothic building, which this close view of the courtyard shows plainly.
