About this postcard
A covered wagon with a white canvas top and a team of oxen is shown in a desert landscape with red hills under a blue sky. The printed caption calls it a prairie schooner and traces the type to the Conestoga wagon built by the Pennsylvania Dutch in the mid-eighteenth century. It says the Prairie Schooner made possible the conquest of the American Far West a century earlier. The caption also places this particular wagon on U.S. 66 after leaving Tijeras Canyon and entering Albuquerque from the east, the route through the Sandia Mountains that brought motorists into the city.
