About this postcard
A color-tinted view looks through the gap of Crawford Notch in New Hampshire's White Mountains, with a steep rocky cliff on the left and a wooded slope on the right; a train trailing white smoke crosses a shelf of track in the middle distance, and a trestle and small station building appear at lower left. The printed caption calls the scene "The Heart of the Notch," and the sender identifies the trestle as the Frankenstein Trestle. Crawford Notch, carved by the Saco River through the White Mountains, was a celebrated scenic stop on the Portland & Ogdensburg (later Maine Central) Railroad's Mountain Division, and the Frankenstein Trestle, completed in the 1870s, carried the line along the cliff face above the notch.
